June Round-Up

Sinead Harnett feat Snakehips: No other way
After featuring on two of 2013's biggest debut albums - those of Disclosure and Rudimental, Harnett's collaboration with Snakehips on 'No Other Way' is everything you could want for a laid-back summer playlist. And if one song wasn't enough, Harnett also features on Snakehips' new track 'Days With You'.

Beartooth - Disgusting
Beartooth are riled up and riled up sounds great. The structure is intricate, it's fast-paced and Caleb Shomo's screamed verses switch effortlessly into clean choruses. It's taken their tour pals Of Mice & Men three albums and years of hardwork to rise to the level we reckon Beartooth will reach in half the time.

Trade Wind - Suffer Just To Believe
"Supergroups" are either mindblowing or unbelievably disappointing and luckily for Stick To Your Guns' Jesse Barnett and Stray From The Path's Tom Williams, Trade Wind are the former. This debut EP is atmospheric and haunting. Trade Wind are a perfect blend between Deftones and Thrice, and we could not ask for more.

Coasts and Secret Company at Dingwalls, London
The next generation of indie/dance-beat types took to the stage on this midweek evening in Camden. Secret Company started proceedings with their anything but dull set of soon to be indie party-starters. Headliners Coasts had the sold-out room dancing from wall-to-wall with anthems 'A Rush of Blood', 'Golden City' and of course title track of new EP 'Oceans'. Coasts definitely are festival headliners in the making.

PVRIS: St Patrick
Rarely swayed by endoresements from other bands, PVRIS are an exception to this rule having A Loss For Words' Matty Arsenault firmly by their side. It would be easy albeit lazy to compare this three-piece to Paramore. In fact they sound nothing like Paramore. PVRIS' debut single 'St. Patrick' was released last week through Rise Records as the label's first ever female-fronted signing. Definitely ones to keep an eye on.

Camden Rocks Festival 2014
A very short but sweet visit to Camden Rocks Festival tied up a whirlwind month in May. Despite only being able to clock up four hours in London's finest alt hub we managed to catch a fairly eclectic bunch of acts. Kicking off our day were Verses at The Underworld showcasing half an hour of tracks from their debut album 'Feel It Faster'. Next was a walk down to the Purple Turtle for the return of Flood Of Red, six and a half years since I first saw them they're still packing one hell of a punch. Blitz Kids filled Electric Ballroom and ramped up the energy with a sing-along set, notably 'Sometimes' and 'On My Own'. Attention Thieves' second set of the day was in the busy and sweaty Beatrice proving exactly why seeing this band once during a festival is just not enough. I finished my day with The One Hundred at The Good Mixer who had the tiny back-room bouncing from wall-to-wall with their energetic Shikari-esque sound.

Justified June Mentions:
  • Bury Tomorrow and Chunk! No Captain Chunk at ACT, Kingston
  • Swim Good and Massmatiks at Camden Barfly, London
  • Homemade banana milkshakes
  • Orange kitkats and chocolate orange digestives
  • Grand Union Bar, Brixton
  • Aurora, Now Voyager and Vanity Draws Blood at Black Dog, Crawley
  • Almost everything in New Look right now

Do It Over, It's Eez-Eh

You may have spotted a synopsis of this post on WIIHAMB's Twitter a few weeks ago, but I feel as though this is a matter that deserves a post of it's own post.

Last week saw Kasabian release their fifth studio album '48:13'. Yes, their fifth album. Believe it or not (you should, it's a fact), breakout single 'Club Foot' was released over ten years ago.

The lead single from the new album is the peculiarly titled 'eez-eh'.

Eez-eh... Easy? Well, it probably was, wasn't it, Kasabian?

Below is a quick formula for just how (I am inclined to believe) Kasabian wrote 'eez-eh'.
For a more detailed outlook, please listen further.

Step 1)
Take unsuspecting Chemical Brothers club anthem 'Do It Again'.

Step 2)
Take geek-electro mob Hot Chip's better known single 'Over and Over'.

Interestingly, both steps so far have affiliations with EMI, but let's not get bogged down in details.

Step 3)
Divide step 1 by step 2.

The Result
A strangely familiar sounding 'eez-eh' as performed by Kasabian. (This we can definitely vouch for; not so sure about everything else.)

Feast your eyes and ears on the following:

So there we have it. If only A-Level maths had been that eez-eh.

Slam Dunk South 2014

Originally I said that I would post about Slam Dunk in the June Round-Up... but that's ages away so Slam Dunk is getting its very own post.

We'll whizz past the packed train, long queue and downing a queue-made bottle of vodka and coke like a 15 year old and get straight to the good stuff.

Light You Up's perfect pop punk got our day off to a strong start  - we were still singing one of the new songs at 4 am on the train home. Canterbury are right at home over on the main stage with the ever-growing crowd in the palms of their hardworking hands. Decade have The Forum full to the bring for their half hour showcase of the best they have to offer. Matty Arsenault gets up close and personal during A Loss For Words' set which included 'Mount St Joseph' in commemoration of US Memorial Day. I Am The Avalanche were everything I could have hoped for although they lost a lot of their potential crowd to State Champs downstairs who had their room heaving and practically raining with crowdsurfers and flooded with finger-pointing. Back in The Forum, it took Zebrahead 35 minutes to get to 'Anthem' and when they did it was over in a heartbeat, disappointing after a two year wait to see them live.

Pit stop for food and some quality time in the line for the ATM.

Hit The Lights stuck to "the old stuff" for their set and it went down perfectly for everyone in the room. Meanwhile, letlive. are outside sounding huge and naturally Jason Butler's hanging off anything that's going. Everyone is entirely spoilt for choice when it comes to headliners tonight. 'Dirty Little Secret' was all we really needed from All American Rejects, the on-stage bravado was a bit much after that. My head was telling me Chiodos but my heart told me Bury Tomorrow - and I went with my heart. A stonker of a set featuring songs across all three albums, the only downside was the concrete - falling over on that wasn't the highlight of the day.

It was all over way too quickly if you ask us... is it SDF15 yet?!

Holy Fuck Things Have Changed

Hi again,

I've been running What If I Had A Music Blog for almost a year and a half now, and I felt as though it was time to turn things up a notch.

From now on, this will be the main site for WIIHAMB but WIIHAMB Daily will run alongside on the usual tumblr site with the simple daily posts that everybody is used to.

Here posts will be more lengthy, a bit more in depth and there will be a lot more room to experiment.

Please follow/subscribe etc, all of the links you'll need are below and please feedback on the new site and #content.

There may still be some teething issues with the domain as I've just switched it over but hopefully those will be ironed out by Monday. In the meantime, when typing in the URL make sure you include 'www' at the start.

I'll also be adding and adjusting pieces here and to this site so keep checking back regularly!
